Yes, historically Japanese characters were based on Chinese ones. The two languages are completely different – but use same characters. This means I can understand the meaning of some parts of written Chinese, but I don’t know how to pronounce the words. Also I don’t understand spoken Chinese at all. It’s an interesting dynamic for sure.
