Last month I escaped to the picturesque Chichibu region nearby Tokyo for an extended break with a friend. We stayed at traditional Japanese inns, enjoyed hiking and relaxed in hot spring baths.

When you carry a backpack you soon realize how little “stuff” you actually need. It was a rare opportunity for me to unplug from the gravitational pull of email and social media too.

Let’s face it — there are times when life gets a little too cluttered. A little too hectic and a little too complicated. We’re driven to succeed so we pile our plates sky high with as much as we can fit.

Many of us are addicted to chasing success.

We spend our lives working toward goals we believe will make us happy. But once we achieve our goals, a predictable pattern occurs.

  • Our satisfaction is fleeting.
  • What we wanted in the past is no longer enough to make us feel happy.
  • We feel compelled to level up our game.
  • We set our sights on bigger, more audacious goals.

Chasing and achieving goals is important. Yet when you’re ultra competitive, you may not be on a path to greater happiness.
